Colton v Thackley – School Lane Colton
The best 11 cricketers that our village could find made the long journey to Colton who sat top of the table going into week 5. A tough game was only made harder when Dewy lost the toss and we were asked to field first.
After 10 overs Colton were 25-0. Craig Wiseman bowled quick down the slope and Andy Roberts was also looking good having the openers playing and missing. Unfortunately (due to a couple of dropped catches) Thackley couldn’t make the breakthrough and once Colton saw off the new ball it was an absolute nightmare.
BOWL – HIT – FETCH – REPEAT – until Colton finally ran out of overs and finished 337-8. Wisey picked up 4-69, Roberts 2-52, Shane Marshall 2-56.
Chasing 337 is not really what Naylor or anyone who knows Naylor wants to see. It would take him 3 days to reach 337 so 50 overs in fading light was 100 steps too far. Naylor did the right thing and played across the line early. Jack Allport is also a proper cricketer and left the slogging to Kaiden Verity, Aston Dalladay, Haseeb Khan and Adam Boocock who all read the script. Once Jack Holland was bowled for 29 Thackley had high hopes of being home for 7pm (not a bad day after all).
Then our bowlers (who arguably lost us the game 3 hours ago) decide to waste everyone’s time and start hanging around with Captain Dewhirst??? I should wax lyrical about Dewhirst 50*, Marshall 27, Roberts 40, Wiseman 17 but in all honesty they just wasted everyone’s time and we didn’t get home until 21:00!! Thackley finished 213 from 42 overs.
Jack Holland Report:
Luckily I was at gully today so me and Jack had multiple conversations as the ball was being looked for in the trees. He aimed a few unanswerable questions/comments at me:
‘Do you think I’m single cause people call me FJ? Its not easy explaining to a girl it means Fat Jack. I once said it meant Fit Jack but she didn’t believe me’
‘If I get 500 runs this season Farsley will take me back! I should play top Div Bradford League but they don’t like me, probably Webbo’s fault ’
‘Wish I could text Maguire, its been 2 hours’
Mule of the Match:
Arise Sir Haseeb Khan – 1 over for 22 runs. His first delivery pitched middle and just missed off stump. His next 5 deliveries pitched middle and missed Leeds City Centre by 500 yards.
Airse Sir Aston Dalladay – 10 overs 85 runs and no wickets! Just bowl another short one Aston and see if he can clear that tree instead of hitting it …. Ohhhh he can clear it
Arise Sir Andy Roberts – ‘im in 2nd slip Naylor come on off to gully you go’ – ten overs and two dropped catches later………..’Naylor you come into 2nd I’m off to third man for a sulk. I’m also getting picked on by a 12 year old and I don’t like it’.
Arise Sir Shane Marshall – Shane has been badly missed and his return to action from his various excuses was only going to improve our bowling attack. That was the impression among the fans until his 3rd ball was hit so far someone in Roundhay Park jumped in the car and brought it back. ‘I thought It had come from North Leeds CC, couldn’t believe it when I realised it had travelled from Colton’ said Corbin from Seacroft. 56 from 7 overs, great return Shane.
Arise Sir Jack Allport – 6 overs 44 runs 0 wickets. A bit harsh to include young Jack as the ball was sailing to all parts when he came on but it’s still 7.33 an over!
Arise Sir Craig Wiseman – His bowling figures of 69-4 from 15 under the circumstances wasn’t bad at all but no bowler is off the list today when the opposition score 337!!!
Arise Sir Kevin Dewhirst –To get 50 not out when everyone wants to go home and we’ve no chance of winning is quite frankly embarrassing, he batted very well though.
Arise Sir Adam Boocock – Imagine getting smashed for 337 and not being asked to bowl
Man of the Match:
Alfie Dewhirst managed to find various spare balls during the innings to keep Thackley in the field so they could complete the 50 overs.
Moment of the Match:
Debutant Kaiden Verity was at mid-on, runs round to mid-off and takes a great catch falling forward. Kaiden has earned his place in the 1XI and didn’t let himself down today. We had Jack Allport, Aston Dalladay and Kaiden in the team all under 17s!! Kaiden seemed to enjoy himself so if you can enjoy that today he’ll enjoy anything!
Thankfully we are at home next Saturday where we don’t lose. This week Old Leo’s will be taking a beating at the home of cricket, 1pm start.
